Training Requirements For  Property & Surety Bail Bondmen

Effective July 1, 2005 the licensing of  Property and Surety Bail Bondmen's will come under regulatory  authority of the Department of Criminal Justice Services in accordance with article 11(ss 9.1-185 et seg).

In order for indivduals in the bail bonding industry to continue business after June 30th, they must obtain a license from DJCS by July 1, 2005 DCJS will begin accepting applications on May 1,2005.  the license will be issued for a two-year period.

All  individuals who wish to be licensed must complete the 24-hour entry level course to comply with the new requlations. Bail Bondsmen who have access to a firearm in the course of their duties must also complete a firearms training class. For more information log onto  hhtp://www.djcs.virginia.gov

Training Requirements for Bail Enforcement Agents

Effective October 01, 2005, the licensing of Bail Enforcement Agents will come under the regulatory authority of Department of Criminal Justice Services in accordance with article 11 (ss 9.1-186 et seg).  The license will be issued for a two-year period.

In order for bail enforcement agents (bounty hunters) to continue providing services after September 30, 2005, they must obtain a license from the Department of Criminal Justice by October 01, 2005.  Please be aware that is shall be a Class 1 Misdemeanor to engage in bail recovery for profit or other consideration without a valid license issued by the Department in this Commonwealth (ss 9.1-186.13).

UPDATE TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Effective August 20, 2008, all individuals who wish to be licensed as a bail bondsman must complete a 40-hour entry level course.  The fee for licensing now consist of the application fee, fingerprint card processing fee and a license category fee.
